19 th of April, the night of magic and mystery, the night of a grand production, CARRIE. Guests of ages 13 and above came glamorous and glee. Backstage were the performers themselves, ladies getting dolled up and bejewelled and gentlemen suiting up for the prom night was spectacular.
It was not long ago where four students, the founding members of the production, took the initiative to put on a senior school concert. There were numerous options for it, surveys were taken, research was done and finally, CARRIE the musical was chosen to be the production of a lifetime.
Dated back to the mid nineteenth century Carrie the musical was a horror genre based book, musical and a movie. The reputation of the movie was down in the ditch, this according to many was due to the fact it focused on the goosebumps the play had to offer. Although the Dubai Scholars production did not see the relevance of scarring their guests for life. Instead the main intention was to bring to life the magic and chemistry in the script. The chosen cast had been working towards the targets and standards of the show, actors bringing drama centre stage, singers putting the music in musical and dancers bringing grace, intensity as well as excitement to one and all.
The final days of rehearsal were crucial to the end product put forward on opening night. Mistakes were prohibited, no minor details were overlooked, props were made and the costumes for college girls and boys, for ladies and gentlemen were fitted beautifully. Everyone was looking magnificent on the opening night and with a touch of makeup for all, the cast for Carrie the musical was ready to begin the ‘‘Night we’ll never forget’’ (song from Carrie the musical). The show went on without a hitch, elements of drama, humour and rage, were spectacular sights to the audience’s eyes.

The story centred a young girl named Carrie who was trying to fit in with the world but was unable to due unfortunate circumstances, including her mother Margret. What made things worse was that no one accepted her and all they did was mock her. One day in the locker room Carrie had a migraine, the girls there had no intention of helping her and instead they chose to make a fool of her, this traumatizing scene soon lead Carrie to discover she had telekinesis. When sue felt carrier’s pain and regret her decision to make fun of her she asked tommy ross to take Carrie to prom instead ofher. Carrie reluctantly but happily agrees.
Chris on the other hand was ban from prom due to her insensitive comment and unwillingness to apologise to Carrie. She and her prom date, billy Nolan, plot revenge on unsuspecting Carrie white. Margret pleads with Carrie not to go, as she knew of carrier’s power and that Carrie would be hurt if she did. Carrie had no plans to stay at home and went with tommy to prom. Chris’s plan to gain revenge had worked and Carrie was humiliated after being chosen to be prom queen. The dramatic yet emotional scene, Destruction, set out a vibe of intensity as Carrie had put an end to everyone, everyone but Sue.
Sue then follows Carrie back home and finds Carrie lying on the floor bleeding, this was Margrets attempt to kill Carrie yet in process she too was killed by her daughter. Sue comforts Carrie as she dies. Carrie the musical is a tragic horror production but our school was able to rid the horror and pity and bring in emotion, passion and love.

‘‘Carrie the musical was an amazing experience, we all had seen each other before but the entire production brought us closer together. Being Carrie was a lot of fun yet required a lot of hard work, but it paid off in the end. It was a lot of fun working with everyone from different year groups and it was truly a night we’ll never forget’’. – Danielle year 8 (Carrie)
‘‘It was truly magical, it was a thrilling concert one of the best I have seen in Dubai Scholars. This was the most professional production I have witnessed in this school and look forward to seeing more as such’’. – An audience member

‘‘I think what was the most interesting and intriguing part about the concert, then any other concert we had is that this concert was completely student lead. From what costumes are going to be worn to the background, props, scripts were done by the students, of course we had help from our teachers, sir Aubin, sir Richard and Mrs Sapna. This event would be life changing in a way as I have never organised something as big as this but to be honest, I felt I was in power with the tenth graders I made new friends and found out how they work, how I work, so there was a lot of diversity of ethics and strategies. I would absolutely love to organise another concert because in all my 12 years in Dubai scholars no experience has come close to this’’. (lamya)
